We live in an era where technology has eliminated geographical boundaries; the reality of the global village is at our fingertips via the internet. In time, this interconnectedness may help ameliorate bias and discrimination as well as increase understanding and tolerance. However, instant and easy connections with other cultures highlights a challenge for research psychologists and consulting psychologists in terms of cultural competence.

A related concept to cultural competence is cultural literacy. Wang (2003) argues that, "Cultural literacy... refers to the basic knowledge that is required for individuals to interact meaningfully with one another in a large social group." Wang, J.
