"Use Decision Tree Technique to Optimize Institution's Student Admission Process- A Case Study"

Background in real world: The field of artificial intelligence was formally founded in 1956. There are a variety of advanced developments since then. The applications of AI are accelerated in recent years due to big data availability.

New challenge in real world: It is an unavoidable trend that AI gets into our daily life in accelerated speed. The high-tech industry is focusing on AI such as driverless car, smart business decision process etc. Students with AI expertise are on high-demand.

Signature Assignment achieves following CLOs:

(1) Students have to identify the intelligent agent (the administrator of the institution) and the environment (the admission application pool), and their interactions. This step is in the scope of SWE640 CLO "Define building blocks of artificial intelligent systems"; and CLO "Establish the action and reaction between agents and environments".

(2) Students have to establish data sets/attributes for each applicant and determine the classification boundary for different categories. This step is in the scope of SWE640 CLO "Use knowledge representation to implement an intelligent agent"; and CLO "Solve classification problems with regression techniques".

(3) Students have to design the decision tree algorithms and write computer program to select group of applicants who are the best to satisfy institution's admission requirements. This step is in the scope of SWE640 CLO "Apply decision tree technique to classification and prediction in data mining".
