Red blood cells express glycoproteins that establish your blood type and determine which type you can accept during a transfusion. Consider blood type "O" to answer the following questions.

  1. List the blood type you would like to consider during the exercise. Even if it's not actually yours, treat it as if it is.
  2. Define antigen and antibody in relation to blood types.
  3. What antigens are expressed on the membrane surfaces of your red blood cells?
  4. What antibodies are present in your plasma?
  5. If you were to test your blood type using prepared antibodies, which of the wells (anti-A antibody or anti-B antibody) would show agglutination for your blood sample?
  6. Can an individual who is Type A donate blood to you? Why or why not? Be sure to include terms like antigens and antibodies in your response.
  7. Can an individual who is Type B donate blood to you? Why or why not? Be sure to include terms like antigens and antibodies in your response.
