CHICANO HISTORY
Answer all four questions.
1. Define and analyze the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo relative to the Historical Evolution of the Chicanos. What has been the significance
of this document for Chicanos throughout the 19th and 20th centuries? Relate information from textbooks, lectures, discussions, and your opinion on the subject.
2. It has been argued by some that Chicanos fall somewhere between the colonial and immigrant experience, largely because despite their initial involuntary presence (the invasion of Texas 1835-1836) , Mexicans have been voluntary immigrating into the United States ever since the Southwest was annexed (in particular the exodus of Mexicans to the United States from 1910 to 1920). Discuss and evaluate this notion.
Present conditions that support your case.
3. One of the most persistent myths in history and social sciences is that of the passive docile Mexican-American. The truth, however, is that
the history of the Mexican and Chicano people is replete with examples of active resistance to economic, political, and legal oppression. Discuss the Period of Resistance from 1846 into the beginning of the 20th century. Be specific in the use of your examples (names of individuals and interest groups, regional and geographical variations).
4. Discuss the role of the Chicano relative to the industrialization of manufacturing and agriculture in the Southwest from 1900 to 1930.
Relate the Chicanos plight and struggle in the areas of labor organizing, migration, urbanization, and immigration.
