The performance of the business function is no more than simply strategic decision-making in various areas by an individual or a team, and which may be carried out in a conscious, coordinated and planned way. It may be supported by solid decision support systems or by impulsive moves, which may sometimes be unstable if based on intuition or non-articulated information sources.

Strategic direction, as described in course text , is a continuous planning process in which business decisions are formulated and re-formulated on the estimations of their future scopes, so that goals and tasks are organized aiming to adapt decisions and their outcomes to previously set goals. Organizations have to define a strategic direction which can be seen as the organization's roadmap.
