Question - A lithium atom has the electron configuration: 1s2 2s0 3s0 3p1 (excited state). Would the "ground state" for the excited electron in the 3p orbital be in n=2 since the n=1 state is full? I know ground state means the lowest energy state (i.e. n=1), but there is no room in the n=1 shell and since the excited electron was orinally in the 2s orbital, I would think that the ground state for this electron will in the n=2 shell.
Any clarification is appreciated. Thank you.
