Assignment:

To provide a personal dimension to the study of health needs and programs for aging populations, students will be required to conduct an in-depth interview with an individual who is 65 years of age or older. The individual could be a family member/ neighbor (excluding the name), and the interview should preferably be conducted face-to-face in one or multiple sessions. Upon conducting the interview, students are required to write a report with a minimum of 500 words and submit the report via Canvas by the due date stated in the Course Schedule. The first part of the paper covers the data being collected the second part covers your reflection on the experience. Your reflection may include responses to the following questions:

  • What are some of the life lessons you can learn from the interviewee?
  • In what ways do you think you are like the person you interviewed?
  • In what ways (if any) the interviewee has influenced you?
  • How do you define a "good life" or a "successful life" for yourself moving forward?

Be sure to have your questions ready before starting the interview. You may ask the following questions and add your questions.

  • Thinking about your early life experiences, are there particular childhood experiences you recall that were particularly meaningful or impactful? Can you share one or two? (Maybe a positive memory and then a time when your interviewee faced a significant challenge)
  • As you grew up, did you face any difficulties or barriers? (These could be personal, physical, mental, medical, familial, economic, social/structural, e.g., discrimination, historical, e.g., a war or significant social or political event, etc.)
  • Do you see ways that your life was affected (helped, limited, affected in any way) by things that you didn't have any control over, e.g. your gender, race, ethnicity, class, sexual orientation, citizenship status, disability, religion, access (or lack of access) to good schools, jobs, and other opportunities? (You don't have to ask all of these - you can get a sense of the person and give her/him a sense of what you're getting at, using some of these as examples).
  • What lessons have you learned in your life that you would want to pass on to someone younger? Is there anything you would do differently in your life if you could do it over, and if so, why?
  • What changes have you seen in your life (politics, the economy, gender roles, ideas about health, leisure, retirement, and social norms)? In your opinion, what have been the effects of these changes (e.g., good? bad? mixed? how?)?
  • What are your greatest sources of stress and strength in your life today? Possible sub-questions: A) Are you living near friends and family? B) Are you involved in local or virtual communities (civic, religious, philanthropic, political, activist, travel, etc.)? C) Do you feel like you have adequate support, resources, and services in your life? Why or why not? Are there support and resources you wish you had?
