A Defense of the Ford Pinto's Engineers

A lot of people are often so emotional when talking about accidents and loss of lives they do not put into perspective the time when these events occurred. When cars were first invented they did not require seatbelts. A standard safety feature every car today is required to have when manufacturing and designing a motor vehicle, was not a requirement 70 years ago.

We have come a long way since the production of the first car. The laws surrounding cars have changed and added greater restrictions and requirements for vehicles. Unfortunately, mistakes have to be made for us to learn from them and create ways to prevent repeated actions. This is the case for the Ford Pinto. Ford engineers were in a different world back then and they created a type of car they believed was correct and safe. The resulting failure showed the engineers that they were wrong and had to reassess their design to make the vehicle safe for the user. Would I do the same things Ford's engineers did? Of course I would. These guys were doing their job to the best of their knowledge and did what they were told. They weren't some high school students who didn't care. They were top of the line engineers hired by Ford to create a car they deemed reliable and profitable for the company.
