Since the 1770s, the world watched as the United States defeated Britain, arguably the most powerful country in the world, twice. They watched as their industry boomed to unprecedented levels as the United States became an attractive place to live. However, the Civil War quite possibly changed that outlook. Grant was seen as a hero in the various European countries he visited after the war, but perhaps that wasn't the whole story. In your opinion, how do you think the Civil War made the United States look to the rest of the world? Did it make us look fragile, or do you believe the rest of the world truly hailed the North as the "defenders of liberty and freedom"?
