What data would you need to use for a t-test if a person is trying to determine if antimicrobial urinary catheters decrease CAUTI rates in comparison to standard catheters? The instrument to use is the AHRQ CAUTI-related data collection tool. Other data collected is: from each participant the inclusion and exclusion criteria, baseline clinical and demographic data, the allocated intervention (size, reference number, and whether the aseptic conditions are observed), observance of best practice guidelines for catheter maintenance, number of CAUTIs based off CDC definition of urinary tract infections, results from urine and/or blood analysis, culture and sensitivity test, any treatment given, adverse events as well as the data and reason for urinary catheter replacement or removal, number of catheter days. Quantitative descriptive analysis characterizes the world or a phenomenon by identifying patterns in data to answer questions about who, for what, where, when, and to what extent (Loeb et al., 2017). The demographics include age older than 65, gender, and type of catheter used. Visual presentations will be used to represent the demographic data. The visual presentations will include: pie graph which represents gender; histogram for age; box plots which will show comparison between age and catheter type.

Inferential statistical tests make comparisons and draw conclusions from the study data (Gray et al., 2017). An independent t-test will test the hypothesis and determine if there is a decrease in CAUTIs in the experimental group.
