For an object, mechanism, process, or subject area of your choice, prepare a one or two-page part-by-part description. The object, mechanism, process, or subject area you choose may be directly from an academic area, hobby or interest in which you are experience or from one that you to plan to pursuit in the future. It is not necessary that you are very experienced/knowledgeable within the topic you choose for this assignment before you start. Of course, choosing a topic new to you will require some additional research, but you also stand to learn more about something that interests you. Your topic may be concrete but may also be abstract.
Your Extended Definition/ Part-by-Part Description should contain three key components:
A short introduction/extended definition that helps introduce your object, mechanism, process, or subject area to a general audience. It should give your audience a good grasp of what it is, help them understand its value and get them excited and wanting to learn more. It might be a paragraph or several paragraphs.
A "part-by-part" description of 5-10 major components or "parts" of the object, mechanism, process, or description. In addition to sentence or two defining each part, you may also want to provide more explanation or related examples to further clarify each part's description.
Layout that allows to the audience to see and understand both the object, mechanism, process, or description as a whole and its major parts individually. It might be a simple as a numbered/bulleted list or a concept web, but you may experiment with more visual layout techniques or graphics to show your audience the whole and its part. (Certainly, this is not a graphics arts course so only small consideration during the grading of the assignment will be allotted to this third component but feel free to experiment with simple or complicated layout techniques as it suits you.) Cutting and paste, tracing, or photocopying an image is acceptable as long as your written text is original, and the source of your image is acknowledged.)
Your Extended Definition/Part-by-Part Description assignment should be between one, two or three pages depending on your layout. Make sure to make strong choices about the intended audience for your part-by-part description as this will affect the decisions you make about what level of technical language to go into and the amount of detail to include.
