Donna had worked hard to contribute to achieving the organisational's goals. She was well qualified, capable and met all the performance requirements in the recent evaluation. She was confident that she would get the promotion she worked hard for. When the promotion round was announced, she was disappointed to find that it was Gary who got the promotion. Donna's colleagues confirmed her own view that Gary was not as competent nor contributed as much as she had.

Identify and explain which theory of motivation might provide insight to this situation. If you were Donna and Gary's manager, explain how your understanding of this and other theory of motivation might help you to make the better decision regarding managing and motivating your staff?
