Respond to Social Work competencies come into play because you have to be a decent moral person to be a social worker. Many types of scenarios may come into play from diversity, and empathy and I feel the most important,(arguably) one is the value of human relationships. As professionals we encounter the worst situations imaginable from trauma to violence, loss, and grief each day is different and we never know when we start our day and what we may face. An encounter that I faced during my practicum was seeing a client whom I worked with several years ago in a different position. I worked with her as a teenager, she was in a program for troubled teens, and knowing her past and her behavior was something I had to look past when providing services to her recently. In the agency where I am placed, empathy is a huge part of the position. I would also say that is my biggest flaw. I have never been an empathetic person and I am learning how to look past all of my judgments and past experiences to believe the person no matter the circumstances.
