Scenario: A 28-year-old firefighter was injured when a burning branch fell on him during a recent wildfire. He was evacuated to the burn center at a local trauma hospital. He has a full thickness, third-degree burn over the anterior portion of his left thigh. Since his admission 3 days ago, he has stabilized and is off the ventilator. He is alert, oriented, voiding well, and able to eat. He receives shower in the mornings, followed by a dressing change, and then another dressing change in the evenings. Silver sulfadiazine cream is applied to the burn area with saline-moistened gauze. A debridement and skin graft procedure is planned for tomorrow.
