Dealing With People Who Make Your Life Difficult
Statement from Steve Vincent, an employee at Harding Hardware:
Bill Allen is a model employee-or at least, upper management thinks so. The store manager always notes that he contributes significantly during customer service meetings, and they always give him positive feedback for his contributions. Allen excels at giving his supervisor feedback. The supervisors have been overheard describing Allen as "warm and supporting." Allen is very well organized, gets his work done promptly, and often offers to help various supervisors on their sales orders or special projects.
Allen excels at flattery. He is adept at making every detail of his boss's life (e.g., clothes, house, wife, grandkids, and talents) a workplace event. Allen does not care who hears his praise, as long as they have authority. According to Allen, everything comes that from the owner's mouth is the best thing said. Allen's compliments are almost directed toward the owner. "Oh, Mr. Harding, I'm glad you think that customer feedback reporting system is a good idea." Allen might say. "I will do everything possible to make it work."
To say that Allen is agreeable is an understatement. Problems arise when he does not follow through because other employees must honor his commitments. Allen, however, is first in line to take credit when things go well, and he is always willing to do extra favors for Harding. Last summer, all we heard about was how Allen was building a deck on Harding's lake cottage.
However, Allen is chilly to any request from someone lower than him on the company ladder. This presented a problem for Bessie Colicho, one of our timid colleagues. Colicho and Allen were responsible for putting together the monthly advertising flyer, Somehow, Allen was always too busy with more important projects, like helping Harding become familiar with the new inventory control system. Colicho had tried to talk to Harding about the problem, but she was told that Allen was the model employee and that her perceptions of him were unrealistic. I know that when the assistant store manager, George Sutherland, retires next year, Allen will be first in line for his job. It's not fair! He'll get the promotion not on merit but by being the boss's favorite.
