Day fines are fines that are based on a sliding scale. The amount of money a person actually pays for an offense is based on their income. The term “day fine” refers to a fine that is equivalent to a certain number of days of work for the offender. Note that day fines are not progressive like income tax- people with higher incomes do not pay a higher percentage of their income. Also not that day fines are based on income and may not account for wealth. Two individuals with the same income would likely pay the same amount as a day fine, even if one owned millions of dollars of assets and the other owned no assets. What are your thoughts on day fines? Are day fines fair? Would they work in the US?
