DATA EXPLORATION AND ANALYSIS
The dataset
For the first assessment, we're going to be looking at a historical database of team performances in the FIFA Women's World Cup. This dataset can be found on Kaggle: The dataset is available as a csv file, CSE2DV_womens-world-cup.csv, which can be downloaded from the LMS. Please download that file to your local computer, and save it somewhere you'll be able to find it again.
Assessment 1a - Data and Task Abstraction
Part 1 - Data Abstraction
For this part, you will prepare a short data abstraction report on this dataset. Recall from Week 2's lab that for data abstraction, you should discuss, at least
- The data point, dataset, and attribute types of the data,
- The cardinality of the data, and
- Whether data transformations will be necessary or appropriate.
Part 2 - Task Abstractions
For this part, you will perform a task abstraction for each of the following four domain questions. Recall that a task abstraction consists of one (or more) action- target pairs, each accompanied by one or two sentences of justification/explanation.
(1) Do younger or older teams tend to score more goals per game?
(2) Are teams in recent history scoring more goals than teams of the past?
(3) Does ball possession correlate positively with goal scoring?
(4) Do squads that score more (non-penalty) goals also convert penalty kicks at a higher rate?
For this sub-assessment, you are to submit a single document (Microsoft Word or PDF format) to the assessment submission link on the LMS by the deadline
Assessment 1b - (PowerBI or Tableau) - Visualization and Report
For this sub-assessment, you are asked to use the visualization and analysis tools in PowerBI and/or Tableau Desktop to create appropriate visualizations that can answer - or at least inform - the questions from Assessment 1a. Recall that those questions are:
(1) Do younger or older teams tend to score more goals per game?
(2) Are teams in recent history scoring more goals than teams of the past?
(3) Does ball possession correlate positively with goal scoring?
(4) Do squads that score more (non-penalty) goals also convert penalty kicks at a higher rate?
Part 1 - Create Visualizations
For this part, you will create a visualization that answers or informs each of the questions stated above.
Part 2 - Discuss Visualizations
For this part, you will discuss the visualizations that you created in Part 1. Why did you make the design choices you did? How can your vis help a user to answer their question? Did you find an answer to the question, and if so, what was it?
For this sub-assessment, you are to submit a single document (Microsoft Word or PDF format containing high-resolution images of your visualizations).
