A patient has an immunodeficiency disorder in which natural killer cells are only weakly activated. This patient is then infected with a specific virus for the first time. In normal individuals, this virus causes an acute infection upon primary exposure. How will the immune response be altered in this individual, and considering the cytopathic effects of the virus and disease at the host level, how might this infection alter the course of disease and the ultimate outcome of the infection?
