There are a number of legal considerations when dealing with employee leave. For this assignment, assume that you are the HR professional for a private sector manufacturing firm in South Dakota that employs 250 people. The General Manager has received two leave complaints from different employees. He emails you the complaint summaries below and wants you to explain what he needs to know before he responds to them.

Complaint 1 - John Smith notified me that he is not getting the pay he is entitled to by law. He said that last week he only received $667 instead of his usual $1,000 weekly pay. He is caring for his daughter who is recovering from COVID-19.

Complaint 2 - Jane Doe notified me that she was denied FMLA. She was irate and said she is entitled to 12-weeks by law.

Employee John Smith is a full-time machine operator who has been with the company for 5-years. Jane Doe is a part-time clerk who started 9 months ago and works approximately 15-hours per week.
