Assignment - Current trends and solutions using sustainable engineering practices

Overview: This assessment task requires students to examine current articles and reports in the past 24 months relating to sustainable engineering/practises and to perform a critical analysis of the subject area covered in a specific article. Articles may cover areas such as new manufacturing processes, extraction of materials/minerals, infrastructure challenges, renewable technologies, food production, etc. Students are required to demonstrate/speculate on how existing or new engineering practises/solutions can address these challenges in the short and longer term.

Individual Assignment Report: 2000 word maximum, not including title page and references. Marks will be deducted for going over this word count and for late submissions. The assignment is to be done individually, but please feel free to collaborate/discuss with your classmates.

1.0 Introduction

Provide an introduction to the case study in question, highlighting the nature of the case study, the historical, current and future context. The introduction should clearly identify, reference and summarise the article/ report to be critically analysed. In addition the introduction will highlight the primary area of investigation within this subject area and the scope of the critical analysis that will be performed. You are given free range to explore whatever areas of interest that are related to this case study that are of personal interest to yourself, based on the unit lectures.

2.0 Objective
Clearly state the objective of your report and how you are examining the case study with regards to the context of sustainability. Highlight critical factors relating to sustainability, and speculate over how current practises will meet the future needs of wider society.

3.0 Sustainability Factors
You are given free reign over the scope of the discussion in this case study. As the subject can be over several different areas of sustainability, you are to decide what critical elements to highlight in your report. Please draw upon the lesson learned from the previous assignments to think critically about the subject matter in the context of sustainability. You may wish to expand on themes relating to the lecture material, which will guide you on the key factors to consider in your discussion.

4.0Summary
Provide a brief summary of the main elements of the report and how / what has been discussed is important for future sustainable needs of wider society.

5.0 References
List your references in alphabetical order, using Harvard or APA referencing format. References should be properly citied in the text, when making reference to other source material. References which are not used should not be cited. Appropriate references would include, official reports, journal articles, news articles, etc. We do not expect references to popular culture websites, YouTube videos, or other questionable information that has not been assessed or impartially reviewed.
