The current thought about the formation of the Earth’s moon is that it is a result of a cataclysmic collision of a large body with the primitive Earth. Suppose that a body with a mass of 0.014 that of the Earth undergoes a totally inelastic collision with the Earth. Assume that it hits the Earth from an angle of 60° from the forward direction (heading towards the Earth) at a speed which is three times that of the Earth. Find the deflection of the Earth from its original path and find the percent change in the speed of the Earth. How much of the original energy of the two body system is lost in the collision?
