Case Summary: You will find a peer-reviewed journal article on your topic of choice for your persuasive presentations. Articles should be current (i.e. no more than 5 years old). You must then write a summary (minimum of four pages) of the article and submit your written portion along with a full-text, .pdf version of the article.
Purpose: The purpose of this assignment is to help you understand how research is conducted in the field of sport sociology and to give you a deeper understanding of an important topic of your choosing. It also provides support for your persuasive presentations.
How to find an Article: I highly recommend using the library and all of its databases for this. You are paying for the library resources through your tuition. You should use them. Unfortunately, most academic research is stuck behind a paywall, the library pays for a lot of these already. While not an exhaustive list, some good sport sociology journals are:
Sociology of Sport Journal
Journal of Sport Management
International Journal of Sport Management
Journal of Applied Sport Management
It is also very likely that there are good sport sociology articles in general sociology journals that are not specialized to sport sociology.
Sections: The summary should be organized into the following sections, with appropriate headings. Please put a page break between each section as well.
Section I: A statement of the problem/topic.Feel free to use a current event to help you frame the issue (just make sure you cite your source appropriately). Essentially this is where you explain what you are researching and why it is important. Explain what question you are trying to answer with your research and how this article helps. This section should be one page. (You can borrow from your topic submission here).
Section II: Description of methods and summary of findings. This is the actual summary of the article. The summary should briefly discuss the research method(s) used in the article and summarize relevant findings and takeaways. This should be a minimum of two pages.
Section III: Personal observations. This is where you should summarize your biggest takeaways from the article, share your opinions on the subject, how those opinions have changed during your research, discuss potential solutions to improve the researched issue/problem, and make a projection about the future state of the issue. This section should be a minimum of one page.
