Question

A nurse-driven topic of interest related to a current challenge in nursing is the nurse-patient ratio and its impact on the quality of care. The nurse-patient ratio refers to the number of patients assigned to a nurse at any given time. When this ratio is high, meaning a nurse has to care for many patients, it can negatively affect the quality of care. This is because the nurse has less time to spend with each patient, which can lead to missed changes in patient conditions, delayed medication administration, and an increased risk of errors (Doleman et al., 2023). On the other hand, if the nurse-patient ratio is lower, say one nurse for every four patients, the nurse would have more time to dedicate to each patient. This could lead to more accurate assessments, timely medication administration, and quicker responses to changes in patient conditions, thereby improving the quality of care. My interest in this topic stems from the desire to improve patient outcomes and ensure patients' and nurses' safety and well-being. The purpose of exploring this topic is to understand nurse-patient ratios' implications and advocate for optimal staffing levels in healthcare settings to ensure high-quality patient care.
