Culture & Human Development Guidelines for Posting to the Discussion Web
Instructions for Web Posting (approx. one paragraph): Compose at least one substantive posting that helps class members (including me) critically examine, discuss, and/or expand on the ideas presented in the readings.
Your posting must either initiate a new OR build on (i.e., reply to a classmate’s posting) an existing discussion thread. So, take the time to read others’ contributions before posting your own.
Focus your posting on one or two main ideas and keep it brief and concise. Organize it to include the following components:
1.) Title of posting: Choose an informative title that captivates the readers’ attention.
2.) Setup your posting: Refer specifically to which aspects of the readings and/or classmates’ posting inspires your own posting.
For readings: Provide a brief and concise summary as to which of the authors’ ideas your own posting refers to (approx. 1 to 3 sentences)
Example: Use of one’s own words in summarizing an author’s point Basso’s (1996) characterization of the eloquence of and vital role silence plays in communication among Western Apache contrasts with [incorporate your own contribution here (see #3 below)].
For classmates’ posting: Identify your classmate and the specific aspects of their posting that your own posting speaks to and/or builds on.
Example: Sara mentioned that “arranged marriages in some cultural communities in other parts of the world are analogous to the use of dating websites among a variety of cultural groups in the United States.” I think [incorporate your own contribution here (see #3 below)]
3.) Your own contribution: Formulate constructive and thought-provoking comments, viewpoints, counterarguments, and/or inquiries that connect with the ideas you mentioned in setting up your posting (see #2 above). Do NOT merely agree or disagree (e.g., “Me, too” or “I disagree”) with the authors’ or classmates’ ideas.
Substantiate your contribution with evidence from readings and/or other sources, such as related literature, examples of experiences with other cultural groups and institutions (e.g., schools; youth organizations; work experiences), and current or historical events in the world (e.g., immigrating to the US through Ellis Island; increasing reliance on social media; famine; climate change; challenges with mainstream schooling).
4.) Conclude your posting by inviting others to share their input on your contribution (e.g., What do you think?; Has anybody had similar experiences?).
