A Culture and Socialization Analysis of a Group or Organization

For this first assignment, you are going to apply the culture and socialization material to a time in your life where you joined a new group or organization. It can be a highly formal group such as starting a new job, or a more informal social setting, like meeting your new boyfriend or girlfriend's family for the first time.

1. Make sure you pick an example that will allow you to bring in a variety of different culture and socialization concepts - both from class and the textbook.

2. Have a clear, directly stated thesis/argument to set up your paper.

3. While you certainly do not (and really cannot) include every sub-concept related to culture and socialization that we have looked at, I will be looking to see how you use a range of concepts. It is not enough, for example, to say "When I started High School I had to learn how to act in a new culture" and leave it at that. I want to see you bring in a range of concepts - this is the primary thing you'll be graded on.

4. Keep in mind the purpose of the assignment - to use the course material to directly and clearly discuss how you were socialized into a new culture. Do not just assume I'll know what you're talking about - be direct and explicit in terms of spelling out what the concepts mean, and why your example illustrates them.

5. Put all definitions in your own words.
