Overview of Assessment
A core requirement of PUBH 1425 is to understand the concept of cultural safety and how it relates to healthcare. This means as a student and eventually a graduate of RMIT, and as a working professional within health sciences you will work in culturally safe way. This means that you need to understand how to be safe, inclusive in your work, and, as an extension of that you need to understand how health is impacted by the social determinants.
This assessment requires you to find an example of how a health issue for First Nations people has been presented and to discuss the cultural safety of the way the issue was presented, how it links to the determinants of health and how this information is relevant to your graduate life.
Assessment Task
Follow the steps below to get started on this assessment task:
Question 1. Find an artefact (this could be a media report, video, policy, social media post, advertisement, research paper) that presents information on the health (or an aspect of health) of First Nations People. You might find this artefact through a Google search, a social media post, a podcast, a research article you have come across in your studies, a text book chapter or section. Perhaps you have seen something about a culture/religion/under-represented group, or maybe even something in the news/and advertisement that is about an aspect of your identity and culture - that represents OR misrepresents you.
*edit March 27th, 2024 - to clarify the artefact can be a about an aspect of health about First Nations Peoples or culture/religion/under- represented group, or maybe even something in the news/and advertisement that is about an aspect of your identity and culture - that represents OR misrepresents you. The key requirement is that the artefact includes an element of health that you can use to answer the questions below.
Question 2. You need to submit 800 words or a 6 minute audio or visual presentation answering the questions below;
a. Discuss - Is the information in the artefact presented in a culturally safe and inclusive way? (Suggestion: 300 words on this section).
b. Can the health issue be linked or explained by a social determinant of health? Which one? Is that determinant of health reflected in the Close the Gap Targets? Which one? (Suggestion: 100 words on this section)
c. Include a brief statement that explains why, in your discipline (Biomedical Sciences, Health Science, Applied Science, Laboratory Medicine, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Pharmacy, Psychology, Nursing) you need to be inclusive and culturally safe. Explicitly link your explanation to any policies, guidelines, or standards that support your answer. Consider how being culturally safe and inclusive will impact
your professional colleagues, and the consumers of your work (patients, clients, participants).
Question 3. You need to cite any resources you have used in the making of your assessment. Use the preferred referencing style of your discipline (these could be; APA 7th, Vancouver, RMIT Harvard etc). Use RM IT Easy Cite to help you to reference correctly. If you submit an audio or video file, you will need to submit a reference list as a Word or .pdf file.
