CULT1019 Understanding Society - Western Sydney University
Assessment Task - Workbook Response
Learning Outcome 1: Explain key concepts in sociology.
Learning Outcome 2: Identify key characteristics of the major theoretical frameworks used in sociology.
Learning Outcome 3: Demonstrate reading, writing and referencing skills commensurate with university scholarship.
Instructions:
Step 1:
Create a collage of your life - you can use actual images of yourself OR generic images which ‘represent' social factors evident in your life OR a combination of both. Add labels of the social factors which you believe are evident (see example).
Insert collage at the top of your page.
Step 2:
Directly under your collage, insert the following question: Using ONLY the academic sources provided, in 100 words, explain what a ‘sociological imagination' is.
Step 3:
Directly under your response to question 1, insert the following question:
Using ONLY the academic sources provided, in 150 words, choose 1 ‘social' factor that you have identified in your collage and explore it using YOUR ‘sociological imagination'.
To answer this question, you must compare your experience - as shown in your collage - to the research on that factor. You are expected to identify how your experience is similar or different from the research.
Type your response to this question directly under the question.
Step 4:
Insert reference list at the bottom of your assessment on a separate page. Be sure to check the formatting is correct as per the WSU Harvard Style Guide.
Step 5:
We encourage you to use Turnitin as a tool to help improve your assessments. You can upload a draft to Turnitin as many times as you like leading up to the due date. With each submission you will generate a ‘Similarity Report'. Use this report to identify areas to improve.
Assessment description:
Part B requires students to submit a 250-word response to a set question. Students will submit their first response in Week 3 and the second response in Week 11. These responses are designed to help students reinforce their knowledge and understanding of foundational concepts in Sociology. These responses will be marked qualitatively, meaning that there will be a marking criteria, and you will receive written feedback from your tutors.
For this workbook response, you will apply YOUR ‘sociological imagination' to your life.
This will entail, creating a ‘collage' of your life. You can use actual images of yourself (see example) OR generic images which ‘represent' social factors evident in your life OR a combination of both.
After providing a short summary of the ‘sociological imagination' using the prescribed resources, you will engage YOUR sociological imagination to identify and then analyse at least 1 social factor which arguably has influenced your life (as evidenced in your collage). You will explore how your experience is similar to or different from the research (as per the prescribed resources) of that social factor.
