The Spine (Cervical, Thoracic, Lumbar) The spine provides the main support for the body and is crucial to maintaining optimal human function. There are many working parts of the spine that allow the human body to move, bend, walk, and more. The vertebral types include cervical, the neck portion, thoracic, the middle back, and lumbar, the lower back. The Cervical portion of the vertebrate contains vertebrae C1 to C7. The cervical portion also has two vertebrae that connect to the skull, which are small and are both ring shaped and peg shaped. These vertebrae allow for motion of the head. The cervical spine seemingly curves in on a skeleton. The main function of this portion of the vertebrate is to support the head. The Thoracic portion of the vertebrate is the largest portion of the vertebrate. It contains twelve vertebrae, T1 through T12. This portion of the vertebrate curves out and is rigid, as it allows for only limited movement. The main function of this portion is to protect the heart and lungs and hold the rib cage in place. Finally, the Lumbar spine contains 5 vertebrae, L1 to L5. The vertebrae of the Lumbar spine are large compared to.
