This study aims to identify if the American lobster, Homarus americanus, is an osmoregulator, osmoconformer, or partial regulator by testing the effects of salinity variations on its acute and acclimatory osmotic responses. To test this, lobsters were acclimated to 34% and 24% saltwater salinity for one week before being placed in the opposite treatment for 30 minutes. Urine, hemolymph, and seawater were then collected to determine the osmolality of the hemolymph and urine. The findings indicate that lobsters maintain the osmolality of their hemolymph independent of the salinity of their surroundings. In conclusion, H. americanus are osmoregulators.
