An organization's ethical behavior has a crucial impact on employee attitudes, morale, and company culture. Furthermore, an organization's ethical behavior has an impact that extends beyond the employee experience to political, economical, social, and legal components of a company. Organizations that uphold their values build accountability and trust among their organization and across functional teams. While this doesn't eliminate the chance of an ethical issue arising, it provides leaders with a clear direction on how to respond to certain ethical situations when they arise. When an organization's actions align with its values consistently and equitably, it not only reduces legal risks, it supports a healthy workplace culture. When an organization fails to do so, it negatively impacts employee attitudes, morale, workplace culture, and puts the organization at greater risk legally.
My organization's ethical code of conduct and behavior has a direct impact on employee morale and business performance. One detractor to employee morale and business performance is an organization's failure to abide by its ethical code of conduct fairly and equitably. One example from my organization has been our dress code policy. We have a dress code that outlines what to wear and what not to wear at work. When our leaders fail to hold staff accountable for following the dress code it causes a negative impact in two ways. The first is a negative impact on employee morale. Employees who follow the dress code see their fellow colleagues not being addressed for violating the policy. The second is the negative impact on our image to the public. Failing to hold our teams accountable to our values and ethics risks the positive and professional image we strive to provide to the members we serve.
