Learning outcome 1: Explore the advantages and disadvantages of various contemporary leadership styles.
Learning outcome 2: Analyse the traits and behaviours of contemporary leaders.
Assessment Instructions
This is an individual assessment which is to be completed out-of-class.
Students will first conduct their own research to identify the most common leadership "themes" in 2024/2025. This will be accomplished by searching relevant articles available via the Kaplan Library databases or other reliable internet searches. A minimum of four (4) articles are to be identified, reviewed and referenced following the Kaplan referencing guidelines.
Students should summarise and critically review the four (4) leadership articles to identify the common themes in terms of contemporary approaches and challenges for leadership. Based on the identified themes identify the associated traits, behaviours, styles and characteristics of the leadership. Having identified the contemporary themes and characteristics, a brief comparison to classical leadership theories and approaches is to be made which highlights any similarities or differences between contemporary and classical approaches of leadership.
Students have the OPTION to assist their research with the aid of ChatGPT/Artificial Intelligence (AI) in doing so it must be referenced and included in the appendix.
The review findings are to be written-up in essay style format (headings may be used) with the following suggested structure and word counts:
Introduction - state the purpose, structure and findings. (250 words)
Summary of articles and identification of contemporary leadership themes - clearly identify each article by author, date and title. (400 words)

Assessment 2 - Presention
Assessment Title: This person is an effective leader because...
Task
Analyse the traits, characteristics and behaviours of a contemporary business leader, and create a video presentation which discusses the findings.
Assessment Description
This assessment builds on the previous Assessment 1, which compares classical theories of leadership to more contemporary theories of leadership in the post-pandemic, digital, data, and AI era. For this assessment, students are required to choose and research a contemporary business leader (2023 - 2025) whom they believe to be an outstandingly good and/or effective leader, and therefore a suitable role model to guide the student's own leadership development and future career path. The research of the leader will identify the traits, behaviours and characteristics and discuss how these have contributed to the leader's success along with their organisation. This assessment addresses the following learning outcomes:
Learning outcome 1: Explore the advantages and disadvantages of various contemporary leadership styles.
Learning outcome 2: Analyse the traits and behaviours of contemporary leaders.
Learning outcome 3: Explain the key functions of leaders and managers in a contemporary organisation.

Students will first choose a contemporary business leader. Preferably this leader is someone the student finds inspirational. The leader can be from any contemporary organisation including NFP and Government. The leader must still be in their leadership role in 2025, and there must be ample up-to date publicly available information available (web, business journals, etc).

"I believe [insert leader's name] is an effective leader because "
The following is a guide to the presentation response,

This assessment brings together the topics of Weeks 1-12 and provides an opportunity for students to apply leadership theory to a practical scenario. Specifically, students will analyse a given case-study/ leadership scenario to identify issues and consider the most relevant leadership theories which can inform the resolution of the issues and then make recommendations for the most appropriate approach to leading a path forward to resolution and positive outcomes.
