A. Reflective essay (2000 words).
Reflect on a critical incident of communication with a patient/client (individual, family or group). Critically analyse the incident by drawing on the principles of communication theory that are relative to the nurse client relationship, the communication skills that were employed or should have been employed, and the outcomes of the incident
Use a structure for reflection such as Chris John's Model or Gibbs Model of structured reflection. This will help you keep focused, and assist you in analysing relevant issues. You need to respond to all the sections of this model. Your reflective essay should:
- Descnbe the incident, identify the issues this raises in relation to communication theory, and provide a statement of your intentions.
- Identify the communication skills that were used or should have been used.
- Critically reflect on the incident in relation to the nurse client relationship, communication skills, and outcomes of the incident
- Critically reflect on your own learning, and decide on any action that you would take in the future should any issues identified arise again
- Support your discussion with relevant and up to date literature
B. Role play: Clinical simulation of communication scenario (1,500 word equivalent).
Students will work in groups of two or three. Each group will be given a scenario that describes a situation with two/three people involved. Each student will be given a role within the scenario, and details of what is expected of them.
Each group will have time to prepare the scenario, and will then have five minutes to act out the scenario. This will be recorded on video, and students will be able to access the recording on Moodie. Each student will use the video recording to critique the communication skills used by the nurse / nurse manager. Marks will be awarded for their cntique not their performance.
Scenarios to be used for clinical simulation video, relating to communication skills in nursing practice, will be developed around the following areas:
1. Breaking bad news
2. Dealing with confrontation
3. Negotiation
4. Questioning
5. Therapeutic communication
6. Assertive communication
7. Reflection
8. Explanation
9. Culturally sensitive communication
10. Advocacy
The video recording from part B is used in writing part C of this assessment
C. Critique of communication In clinical simulation (1,500 words).
You will be given access to your groups video recording on Moodie to review within one week of the recording. Each video will be visible only to the module lead and the members of that group. All video recordings will be deleted once the students have passed part C of the module assessment A critique of the communication skills identified in your scenario is required.
