Industrial Systems Assignment: Electronically controlled systems

Task 1
You are junior engineer working in an automation factory and there are some transducers which you need to interface to a micro controller. Using appropriate simple diagrams describe how you would interface the following transducers.
a. Thermistor
b. Capacitive sensor
c. Serial sensor
d. 4-20mA control loop
e. Photo sensor
In the automotive industry ultrasonic sensors like HC-SR04 can be used to detect an object. Explain how a simple car object detection parking system works.

Task 2

You are an Electronics Systems Engineer working in a plastic manufacturing company. The plastics are prepared in rolls before they can be shipped to customers. The machine which rolls the plastic sometimes over tension the plastic film causing some breakages resulting in a lot of downtime in production. You have been assigned a task to design an electronically controlled system applying the speed control of the servo motor which drives the take-up roll of this motion system. You want to apply your knowledge of controlling a servo motorelectronically using the potentiometer and a differential amplifier. In the process of researching different control systems, you came across the set up shown in fig 1 below. The setup shows a servomechanism velocity control system. The purpose of the system is to provide a constant tension on the plastic film and move up or down the rider roll. One of the apprentices want to know how this system works and how it is going to prevent breaking the plastic film. Give a technical explanation of how this system is going to control the speed of the servo motor and control tension in the plastic roll without breaking it. Your explanation should include the following technical control terms.
• Set point (potentiometer)
• Actuator (DC motor)
• Sensor (wiper)
• Differential amplifier (Error)
• Signal from the rider roll
• Feedback

Draw a block diagram of the closed loop system to show the elements of this system

Task 3

Critically examine and analyse the performance of this electronically controlled paper rolling system and make recommendations for improvement.
