Students will be assigned a case by the lecturer on the first tutorial class. Eight international marketing cases (case #2, 4, 7, 8, 12, 13, 17, 14) will be assigned throughout the teaching period. Case assignments need to be word processed and written in formal English. As dictated by the nature of each case, satisfactory reports may require an outside research effort and include appropriate citations. You are required to make a 5 to 6-minute presentation to your peers and submit a written case analysis on the same presentation day. If you missed the discussion date on the study schedule, you would forgo the presentation/participation score. You are required to confirm with your local lecturer about your selected case on the first tutorial class.
CASE STUDY - Wal-Mart's entry into Africa-not business as usual but a leap into unknown territory
Question 1: Critically evaluate the potential challenges that Wal-Mart is likely to confront in doing business in South Africa in view of the difficult process it had to go through to gain entry.
Question 2: Given Wal-Mart's experience in entering international markets, did its entry into South Africa require a detailed screening approach?
Question 3: Assume you have been appointed a consultant to Wal-Mart and have been asked to review Wal-Mart's strategy in entering South Africa's retail sector. What could Wal-Mart have done differently in its strategy to enter the sector?
Question 4: Identify and discuss the pros and cons of Wal-Mart's strategy of entering into a joint venture with Massmart.
Question 5: Now that Wal-Mart has managed to get approval for its joint venture, what measures can it take in order to ease the tensions that existed between the company and the coalition that was against the venture?

• Ability to apply theories and concepts into the case analysis
• Appropriately and adequately evaluate the key data or information in the case and
• Ability to provide creative alternatives.
