Assessment Brief - Case Studies

Introduction

During the module you will complete 4 case studies. These will expose you to different industries and business scenarios and in each case, you will have a question or questions to answer. The companies and industries are:

A business start-up of your choice.
Intel and the global semi-conductor industry.
Uber and home meal delivery.
Tesla and fuel cell powered cars.

The word count for your answer is limited to 550 words excluding references, diagrams (e.g. logic trees), tables, and appendices. You may use appendices for additional relevant information in support of your solution and in some cases specific Appendices are required to be included. You should also include your logic tree or trees used in analysing the case study.

You should provide a reference list of sources that you have used to provide key evidence or theory in your case study solution, and a list of URL's of online sources that you have also accessed for information.

Time Management
To complete each case study, you must manage your time carefully.
Case Study Feedback
Feedback on your progress will be provided during online classes. The 4 completed case studies will be handed-in on one document for the final submission deadline.

Case Study 1 - Business Start Ups 2020 (500 Words)

Review the list of start-ups in Invest in Startups You Love | Explore Companies | Wefunder, Home of the Community Round and read the Harvard Business Review article about the Lean Start-Up (Blank, S. (2013)).

Select one of the start-ups in the list, or another 2023 start up with which you are familiar, and critically evaluate:
its potential for growth
likelihood of success.
Your evaluation must include, in an appendix, a Business Model Canvas (Blank, S. (2013)) that shows how the business makes money.

Case Study 2 - External Environment Analysis - Semiconductors (500 Words)
Review ‘MarketLine Industry Profile: Semiconductors in Global' (2020).
What are the current and future environmental challenges for Intel?
What opportunities and threats are there for the company?
Note that you will need to research the subject more widely than the MarketLine Industry Profile and that you should include a PESTEL analysis for the Semiconductor Industry as an Appendix.

Case Study 3 - Uber Acquires Postmates (500 Words)
Read the article by Businesswire (2020) on the acquisition of Postmates by Uber, critically analyse Uber's strategy (link below) and answer the following questions:
Uber Technologies, Inc. - Uber to Acquire Postmates
why did Uber acquire Postmates?
Does the acquisition represent a good investment for the Uber shareholders?

You should include as an Appendix a strategy map for Uber (Kaplan and Norton (2000)).

*Case Study 4 - Tesla (500 Words) -Read the Tesla profile in ‘MarketLine Company Profile: Tesla, Inc' (2021) and conduct your own additional research into electric vehicles, both battery-powered, and fuel-cell powered.
Critically evaluate Tesla's resources

Identify gaps Tesla would need to fill in order to launch a fuel-cell powered vehicle.
