Essay - In this assignment students will be required to write an essay which demonstrates a critical understanding of SHRM theory and how HR strategy may impact upon organisational performance.

Essay question:
Critically evaluate and discuss how the concepts of ‘Best fit' or/and ‘best practice' could be applied to the strategic management of human resources in the context of a volatile business environment such as the impact of Covid-19.

Critically evaluate and discuss how your evaluation of the concept can be applied in practice.

The question asks you to consider two perspectives of SHRM, ‘best fit' or ‘best practice' in terms of their impact on organizational performance in the different contexts of the business environment. This means that you need to consider all of the views in the academic literature on this topic and, on the basis of the evidence, give reasons; describe how something happens.

The main issues in the essay are set out on topic three and four. Reviewing the lecture slides and reading chapters three and four of the textbook is a good place to start, as it will give you a good idea of the key issues and the different approaches to them. It will also give you some key points to use in your required literature research on the topic.

In order to demonstrate a full knowledge of the theoretical issues, you will need to read at least 6-8 academic references in addition to the chapters in the textbook.

Academic references include both textbooks and academic journal articles but more engagement with journal articles will demonstrate a deeper engagement with subject theory. The best way to find academic journal articles is to use the WIN library database which is available to all students. Simply typing in keywords from the question will bring up a selection of relevant journal article which are available online. Please review the file ‘online resources student guide' on Canvas to help you get started on how to research for this assessment. It will give you some key points to use in your wider literature research on the topics identified to address the specifics of the essay question.

One Reference list in APA style at the end is required to support your citations in your content.
