New and emerging technologies - critical analysis
Learning outcomes:
The student will:
1. Gain additional experience in writing literature reviews and critical analyses of technical and industry literature
2. Learn how technologies evolve and impact the IT industry and society at large
3. Learn about the major information technology trends and their applications in industry and society
4. Gain experience in sourcing data from public sources
5. Learn how to usefully apply project planning methods to practical data analysis problems
6. Learn how to perform requirements analyses and integrate them into a project plan.
Specification
This assignment has two components. The first is a literature review and critical analysis of emerging technologies in IT and computer science. The second is a planning exercise where the student will develop an implementation plan for assignments 2 and 3 which includes selection of the dataset to be used for assignments 2 and 3.
Part A:
In this part you will review and critically analyze recent developments in IT. We suggest focusing on areas related to
• data management and storage,
• cloud computing,
• data analytics,
• machine learning,
• optimization and
• operations research, and must be relevant to applications in at least one of:
• transport and logistics
• Energy systems and Smart Grids
• data visualization and immersive visualisation environments (e.g. CAVE2 at Monash)
• Information security
• Scientific and artistic computing (such as complex systems simulation, and computer art)
Several sample articles are provided for you in the Assignment 1 resources zip file on Moodle. These are ONLY a starting point and you need to find additional material on your own. You will be assessed on the breadth of your literature search.
You need to critically comment about the significance and impact of the new technology and its
negative or positive impact on:
1. The industries it affects, and,
2. The general impacts on the broader economy, and
3. Human wellbeing
You need to select between 3-6 technological developments that have emerged over the past 5 years
The review and critical analysis must cover the following completeness points
Completeness Points:
1. Good breadth of coverage of key emerging IT technology trends. Not exhaustive but should be comprehensive (meaning you identified all the major uses and applications of the technology you choose)
2. Historical review of the development of technologies you have selected
3. Application areas for the technologies covered
4. Ensure you clearly articulate the relationships between these key technologies and older technologies they supersede. For example, relationships between new and old could include the use of one technology within the other, both the newer and the older technologies could be relevant in this context. In many cases a technology completely replaces an older technology.
5. Adequacy of evidence both in quantity and quality of the evidence presented to support your assessment of the significance and benefits of these technologies
HINTS (Not a complete list of what you should write about but should include these in one way or another)
• Identify 3-6 Emerging IT technologies and/or trends
• Describe their evolution historically
• How do they relate to each other?
• How are they used?
• How are they transforming IT industry, the economy, scientific development, human wellbeing?
• Justify all statements by appropriate referencing or logical argument!
• Diagrams are good!
Part B:
Select a dataset for use in Assignments 2 and 3 based on outline of the assignments in the grey box below, and:
1. Critically review approaches and techniques used to manage and analyse the types of data provided in the data sets for use in the assignments in this unit.
2. Select dataset for use in Assignments 2 and 3 and identify a relevant business problem statement.
a. The problem statement must be developed by you and must be a substantial issue that cannot be easily resolved by a quick look over or simple statistical analysis of the data. You are expected to use your initiative in this matter. Feel free to discuss with the lecturer and tutors.
b. Note that you are encouraged to find a dataset yourself that is suitable for use in these assignments but it must be checked by your tutor or the lecturer.
c. Brief outlines of Assignment 2 and 3 are below.
3. Perform a requirement analysis which will guide process of developing the data management solution for assignment 2 and R-based data analysis solution components to be implemented in assignment 3
4. Develop a project plan to address this problem using information and knowledge extracted through appropriate analysis of the data, and,
5. Develop a project plan and requirement analysis which will guide process of completing the assignments
