CRITICAL THINKING IN MANAGEMENT
ASSESSMENT - REPORT
No matter how good their risk management systems are, companies can't plan for everything. Some risks are outside people's realm of experience or so remote no one could have imagined them. Some result from a perfect storm of coinciding breakdowns, and some materialize very rapidly and on an enormous scale. These novel risks, as the authors call them, cannot be addressed by following a standard playbook.
Risk, uncertainty and doubt push the boundaries of management and this is never more evident during the current COVID pandemic. Leaders within organisations are there to increase control and predictability however dealing with uncertainty involves growing comfortable with ambiguity and trying to build robustness into choices.
Report Instructions:
In light of the above write a Critical Report that addresses the following questions:
1. Which new forms of leadership do you believe can help organisations to ensure their future success? Critically assess a variety of models within your answer. (LO2)
2. Canknowledgemanagementwithintheorganisationhelpittoachievecompetitive advantage and enable it to manage risk, uncertainty and doubt? Should the organisation aspire to be a ‘learning organisation'? (LO3)
3. Does ‘corporate social responsibility' help or hinder the organisation in terms of risk, uncertainty and doubt? (LO3)
Your report should be 2,500 words (+/- 10%). This does not include the bibliography. Your work should be appropriately referenced using standard Harvard referencing.
Assessment Task
In this assessment task you are provided with an extract from an article.
Article Title ‘The Risks You Can't Foresee'.
The three questions are made up of multiple parts so take care to ensure you answer each part of the assessment task.
Question 1 (outcome 2)
You must critically analyse new forms of leadership (eg authentic, spiritual etc) ie find sources & case examples which support and/or disagree with the new forms of leadership you have selected. You can decide how many new forms of leadership you include (likely two, perhaps three). Once you have undertaken the critical analysis, discuss whether these new forms of leadership will help organisations ensure future success. You may also wish to consider gender/feminism in leadership but this is not required.
Question 2 (outcome 3)
Consider whether or not knowledge management helps organisations achieve competitive advantage. Relevant subject areas you may wish to explore in relation to competitive advantage may include: innovation, productivity, customer experience/service, reputation as an employer etc.
To answer the second part of the question you must discuss whether knowledge management enables an organisation manage risk, uncertainty and doubt (ie does knowledge management help to reduce/minimise/remove risk, uncertainty and doubt or not). You may refer to risk, uncertainty and doubt as one term or as three separate components.
The final component of the question requires you to make a decision about whether or not organisation should adopt the philosophy of being a learning organisation (ie is the idea of being a learning organisation something to be recommended or not).
Question 3 (outcome 3)
Discuss whether ‘corporate social responsibility' is a help of hindrance (advantage or disadvantage) in terms of managing (reducing) risk, uncertainty and doubt. As above, you may refer to risk, uncertainty and doubt as one term or as three separate components.
When answering each question, support your arguments/analysis with academic sources/case examples. It is important you come to conclusions, ie make a decision to answer the questions posed (avoid taking the middle group or sitting on the fence). When coming to conclusions remember to always write in the third person so your writing style remains formal.
