Critical thinking and sampling data collection.
Instructions:
Do the following exercises, which will evaluate your learning about the basic concepts of critical thinking and data collection. You must present the necessary processes to support the response of the exercises.
1) In order to know better the way of traveling of a population a survey has been prepared. Some of the questions to be asked are: number of days of travel, money used, number of suitcases and packages, geographical areas, means of transport, nature of the trip (business, tourism, family, health ...) and number of people traveling by family. Classify these seven statistical variables.
2) A veterinarian studies the following characteristics in 20 animals randomly chosen from a farm: weight, eye color, body temperature, number of companions and square meters used per animal. Answer: what is the population ?, what is the sample ?, type of variable?
3) Indicate if it is population or sample in each case:
a) To know the weight of the students in a class, everyone is weighed. _______________.
b) To know the dental health of all children in a city, all students of a school are given a medical examination. _______________.
c) Of the 3,500 people who have traveled on a cruise ship, 280 have responded to the quality survey that was offered to all. _______________.
4) Explain in each case why a sample should be used.
a) The protesters attending a march are asked about their demands.
b) A factory wants to find out the number of hours the batteries they manufacture last.
c) We want to see how effective an anti mosquito product is. It is tested with 10 insects and the time it takes to die is calculated. The process is repeated 20 times.
5) A livestock has 3,000 cows. You want to extract a sample of 120. Explain how this sample is obtained by random sampling.
6) From a population of N = 856 elements, we want to extract a sample of size n = 10. Using the random number table, designate which are the 10 individuals that make up the sample.
7) Of the 450 students enrolled in an elementary school you want to take a sample of 15 of them. Indicates how to do it by systematic sampling.
8) In a certain town We can divide the population into four sections (S) that are identified as: S1, S2, S3 and S4, with a total of 50,000 people. We want to conduct a study on eating habits in each section based on a sample of 1,000 people. What type of sampling should we perform if we want the resulting sample to have representation of all sections?
9) A movie screenwriter has doubts about how to solve the end of his next horror movie. Decides to ask about the feasibility of two possible endings to future viewers. Give two reasons, at least, for justifying that the survey should be done on a sample (and not consult the entire population).
