Question: Research design serves a critical role in ensuring research results are accurate and trustworthy. Multiple issues can exist with a research design that taint its reliability and thus should be avoided. One issue is an unclear research problem. Since the research question serves as the framework around which all the research is structured, an ambiguous question can skew the research, obstruct the issue from being properly addressed, and alter the trajectory of the project. The solution for this is to develop a clear research question and to ensure that question remains the focal point of the research. The research proposal can help ensure the research question is adequately worded by providing the opportunity for others to process and interpret the question besides the researcher. Another issue with research is the tendency to overgeneralize results. Every research project has its own limitations and thus cannot be generalized, and a thorough research proposal will include scope and limitations of the research project. This helps the researcher understand the parameters of applicability in their research.
