Critical Commentary on Stephen Covey's "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People"
Your assignment is to read the ENTIRE book The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen R. Covey and write a critical commentary on the book. A critical commentary examines and critiques the ideas and concepts put forward, and supports such commentary with fact or reason. You may agree or disagree with elements of "7 Habits", but you must support and defend the position that you take. Remember that it is impossible to comment on another's position unless you first understand that position. Truer understanding comes through experimenting with a concept through application. A commentary is not a summary of a book, nor is it a book report. Do not produce a book report!
The following criteria will be relied upon in grading the comment:
1. The commentary must evidence that you have read the entire book and understand the concepts put forward. This evidence comes through in the way you show understanding of the scope of "7 Habits". If it is concluded that the entire book was not read, you will receive a zero grade regardless of what you submitted. (I urge you to avoid the temptation to take shortcuts. Consider how such actions reflect upon your character, the very essence of what lies at the heart of success in entrepreneurship.)
2. Your submission must not be a book report (a summary of the book); content should include your analysis and opinions of the book supported by examples of personal insights and applications of the ideas in the book should be used.
3. You may comment on the concepts in the book as they relate to entrepreneurship, business in general, life in general, or to you as a person. You MUST use the case studies we did in class to help illustrate the concepts, comments and critiques.
4. The submission must not exceed 10 pages (double-spaced, 12 pt font). (There is no minimum page requirement, but anything less than 7 pages would generally indicate a lack of sufficient depth.) The page count does NOT include the title page, bibliography or table of contents (which you must include).
5. A title page is required; titles and subtitles within the commentary should be used. Show some planning in your presentation. Guard against the "one-big-paragraph" trap.
6. APA format is required for all citations. Yes, you are expected to properly quote/cite items from the book or other materials that you reference. MS-Word does most of the work for you, if you don't know how to use the reference feature in Word, see me.
7. This is not an English class, but it is expected that every effort will be made to use proper spelling, punctuation, and grammar. Marks will be deducted for excessive mistakes and sloppiness. Proof reading carefully is strongly advised.
8. ABOVE ALL, the development and sharing of your personal views, insights, applications and experiences on the concepts raised in the book is key.
9. Your write up must follow the following pattern/format:
- A brief summary/evidence of the habit, enough to prove to me that you read and understand the habit in question.
- Your thoughts, commentary, etc. Does the habit have application to you, to business, life in general? Support your answers.
- Provide an example of the application of the habit, or how it could be applied using one of the case studies we did in class (or the person you interviewed in the interview assignment).
