Assignment: A language test design portfolio
Assessing Second Language Learners is assessed by one test design portfolio of 3000 words (please note that there is 10% flexibility in the word count).
The primary aim of the assignment is to assess your understanding of key issues of the unit and to show that you have met the learning outcomes, which are:
1. Demonstrate critical awareness of the major theoretical and practical issues involved in classroom assessment of L2 learners
2. Design and evaluate assessment instruments according to research-driven principles
Instruction
2. Content of the language test design portfolio
Part 1: Intro: Contextual information, test purpose, and objectives (app. 300 words)
Part 2: Test specifications and piloting (app. 500 words)
Part 3: Justification of the design of the test (app. 2,000 words) Part 4: Conclusion (200 words)
Part 4: The actual test (excluded from the word count) Part 5: References (excluded from the word count)
You are asked to use the knowledge that you have gained throughout the unit and the assessment- based classroom scenario you have created (i.e., your teaching context) in order to design a language test, pilot and modify it.
You should
a) explain and justify how the test was written, piloted and modified,
b) report the results of the piloting and the changes you will make, and why so
c) explain the scoring and how the feedback will be given
Note: Students should be aware that this assignment requires a lot of reading as well as time awareness.
An assignment should include but is not limited to the following parts:
1. Introduction and contextual information: target learners, selected teaching context, language area, course objectives, test objectives
2. Test specifications: An iterative, generative blueprints of test design, written at the item level, and allow test developers to produce new versions of a test.
3. Obtain feedback from peers/learners (4 persons in total), summarise and feedback and modify the test where relevant and justify these modifications
4. Explaining scoring and feedback
5. Justifications: Evaluating the extent to which the test will satisfy the five principles (validity, reliability, practicality, authenticity, washback)
6. Conclusion
a. A brief reflection on the possible outcomes of administering your test or how the test could be improved.
b. A brief reflection on what you had mind before designing the test, what challenges you encounter and what helps you overcome these?
c. A briefly reflection on major lessons learnt from doing this assignment.
7. The actual test
