CASE STUDY 3 -
Set out below are descriptions of ethical dilemmas you may face as a counsellor. For each one provide a description of how you would respond.
Be specific. Describe what you would do and/or say in the situation and why.
Scenario 1 - Your workplace suggests you go to a networking function. You attend, and run into a previous client there. You also see some fellow colleagues at the event. What do you do? Do you introduce your former client to your colleagues?
Scenario 2 - You run into a client on the street and it is outside working hours. The client tells you that her husband has hit her. The client has 4 children and the children witnessed this event. What would you do with this information?
Scenario 3 - A colleague tells you that they are having trouble in their marriage and their partner has threatened violence. Your colleague has young children and is feeling trapped. What would you do in this scenario?
Scenario 4 - A current client tries to 'friend' you on Facebook. What is your next move with this client?
Scenario 5 - You are at a party and a friend knows you're a counsellor. They mention they are currently seeing a counsellor and that the counsellor and your friend have started to see each other outside the counselling environment. What would you do with this information?
Scenario 6 - A colleague's wallet has gone missing in your emergency service. You are unsure as to what has happened. Luckily there is CCTV footage in your service as there are many addicts and other desperate clients that access your service. After viewing the footage, you and your manager discover that it was a fellow worker who stole the wallet, not a client. What would the next step be by yourself (the program manager), or the manager be?
Scenario 7 - A colleague has been seeing a counsellor for some time. The counsellor has now asked your colleague to come along to the business and educational events that the counsellor runs. What would you advise your colleague to do?
