Imagine that you are employed at a social work agency serving adolescents transitioning into adulthood. You want to highlight a transitional issue that has posed challenges for the clients with whom you work. You want to send a hopeful message to celebrate this stage of life and support those who may be struggling. You might choose to create a public service announcement (PSA) to convey this message. The most familiar form of PSA is a 30-second television ad, but PSAs can also come in graphics, social media posts, and print ads.
Remember that social workers are advocates, effecting change not just for their clients but for their broader communities as well. For this Discussion, you select a specific transitional issue for adolescents entering adulthood. You then develop and share your own PSA centered on that issue.
To prepare:
Review the Readings and Media tabs of the Learning Resources for information on the transition from adolescence to adulthood.
Review the Writing Skill Resources tab for tips on creating public service announcements (PSAs).
Select one issue from the following transitional issues:
- Living situation (e.g., alone, with parents or caregivers, with roommates)
- College attendance
- Joining the workforce
- Developing intimate relationships
Search online and in the Walden Library for information on your selected issue that you can incorporate into your PSA.
