When beginning treatment with someone who is deaf or hard of hearing, the patient's family plays a major role in the overall success of treatment. When a patient's family is present during treatment, this can be a driving force in a positive or negative way. Part of being in hearing healthcare is fostering family-centered care, and managing the patient as well as the other individuals who are present during the appointments.

Describing what you feel is essential for creating a family centered intervention plan. How might you handle the following situations:

1. A family member who has a lot of underlying health issues, and tends to dominate your patient's appointment by discussing their own health problems.

2. A very supportive family member who has done their research and informs you they know exactly what the patient needs.

3. A spouse who is very negative about how their significant other will do with the treatment you have recommended.
