Question: Kolcaba's Comfort Theory is similar to Watson's Caring Theory. Jean Watson's theory is based on the philosophy and science of caring and divided into specific concepts: human being, health, environment society and nursing. Kolcaba's Theory of Comfort is a middle range theory that describes comfort as an immediate desirable outcome of nursing care. Also, Kolcaba described four contexts in which patient comfort can occur: physical, psychospiritual, environmental, and sociocultural. Kolcaba defined comfort existing in 3 forms: relief, ease, and transcendence.

"Holistic comfort is defined as the immediate experience of being strengthened through having the needs for relief, ease, and transcendence met in four contexts of experience (physical. psychospiritual, social, and environmental) (Kolcaba. 2010)". When you compare the two theories clearly, they have similar aspects of caring for patients and the outcomes within the context of certain realms of care. These nursing models focus on the lifestyle, emotions, culture, beliefs, and behaviors; treating the person as a whole and not just an illness. And the health seeking behavior of these patients with be improved on when applying these factors in to practice thus, creating better outcomes for optimum health and wellness.
