Question: Some benefits to being involved in child educational programming are that parents and families can have a larger impact in determining and helping to provide supports and services to fit their child''s needs (Odom et al., 2007). They feel like they can have in impact on the child''s future. Parents and families can also help prioritize various goals for their child, individualize for their needs, as no one quite knows the child like the family does.
Therefore, specific goals in programming could be developed to help support the child and the family in the intervention and educational process. Some obstacles that families face when being involved is a lack of knowledge of certain processes that occur when developing programs, such as IEPs.
According to Spann et al. (2003), most parents felt that they had a good communication with the schools and had decent involvement in the process, however, what was never discussed is how there is little explanation done for parents to understand the process.
Some other obstacles may be a lack of resources, such as therapy providers outside of the school setting due to lack of funding or lack of knowledge on the specific disability itself. Sometimes the parent's own educational background, or lack thereof, may be an obstacle in forming and creating appropriate goals for that child.
