Deinstitutionalisation in the United States, aimed at improving the life quality of individuals with mental illnesses by helping integrate them into society, has led to several significant negative social impacts. One of the most significant negative impacts is the high incarceration rate of individuals with mental illness. Owing to the insufficient availability of mental health care facilities and resources, individuals with mental health disorders may engage in behaviours that result in imprisonment, rather than them receiving necessary treatment (Lamb & Bachrach, 2001).

Another primary impact is increased homelessness among individuals with mental illness. Due to a decrease in available state hospital beds, limited long-term care options, and other psychiatric resources, many individuals with mental illnesses are discharged from institutions without necessities to effectively manage their conditions, and with a suitable place to go. This exacerbates their mental illness even further.

Finally, reintegrating these individuals into communities often leads to fear and prejudice due to communities lacking mental health understanding. The media frequently depicts mental illness negatively, placing emphasis on violent or erratic behaviour. Such depictions can reinforce stereotypes and add to societal stigmatisation, creating an atmosphere of fear and avoidance, hindering individuals from being embraced by their communities.
