Creating a scatterplot:

One:

Enter the scores shown below in Table 1 into SPSS. In the "Variable View" mode, name the first variable States and label it States Identified. (This is the number of states correctly identified on a map of the USA by applicants for a job as a National Park Guide). Then in the "Data View" mode enter the scores in order.

Table 1

Number of States Identified on an Employment Test

46        45        48        38        47        50        41        48        44        40

42        40        45        36        49        39        43        49        40        41

Two:

In the same data file in which you entered States Identified, enter the scores shown below on Table 2 (for "Visitor Approval") into SPSS. These are ratings of each guide's performance on the job after being hired. The ratings were made by park visitors surveyed on a scale from 0 (very poor) to 10 (excellent). First, in the "Variable View" mode, name this variable Approval and label it Visitor Approval. Then, in the "Data View" mode, enter the scores in order.

Table 2

Visitor Approval Rating on a Scale from 0 to 10

5          7          8          1          5          9          5          7          4          4

5          3          3          1          6          2          0          9          5          1

Three:

Save the data file using the name States and Approval. (Click on "File" then "Save As" then name the file and click on "Save").

Four:

Use SPSS to create a scatterplot showing the relationship between States Identified and Visitor Approval. Click on "Graphs" and then on "Legacy Dialogs." When identifying the variables to be analyzed in SPSS, identify States Identified as the variable to put on the X-axis and Visitor Approval as the variable to be put on the Y-axis.

Export your results to a Word document.

Submit SPSS results and answer the following questions:

Is the relationship direct or inverse?

Is the relationship perfect?

Is the relationship strong?

In the relationship linear?
