Financial Principles in Sport Assignment - Finance Board Meetings Questions
Collegiate Conference Topic Project - For this project, you will be tasked with creating a rationale for a complete conference makeover. Texas and Oklahoma will soon join the SEC, and UCLA and USC will soon join the B10, meaning that anything is possible in the current collegiate landscape. With how much money collegiate athletic departments now make, mostly through media rights deals, geographic constraints have been minimized. Regardless, everyone has their own opinions on what conferences should be made up of which teams, this is your space to create a rationale as to why your conference would make the most sense.
After answering each of these questions, delete all of the text that is related to the questions (i.e., replace the paragraphs with your answers, don't just put your answers underneath it), so that your document is just left with 1) the title of the document, 2) your name and date, 3) your responses to the questions in the Word document. You do not have to answer all questions, but thy are prompts to get you to talk about the specific aspects of this project.
Check out the writing expectations in the syllabus if you haven't already.
Question 1 (At least 250 words): Look at different conferences, and choose one to complete this project for. After choosing the conference, research the different aspects of the conference, and tell me about the different aspects of it. Do they have a media rights deal, and how much money does that deal bring in if they do? Where are the conference headquarters? How much money does each member school get from the deal? What teams are a part of the conference? Are there any unique teams that were a part of the conference in the past? Which team in the conference brings in the most money (in terms of athletic department revenue), and which team brings in the least? Are there any "big" sports that the conference doesn't sponsor (i.e., the SEC does not sponsor soccer)? Who is the current conference commissioner, how long have they had the job, what was their previous job, and have they done a good job based on your research?
Question 2 (At least 250 words): There are certain minimum school requirements in terms of number of institutions, however there isn't necessarily a maximum. For this project though, we will stick to creating a conference that has 12-18 schools. Create a list of 12-18 schools that you think best fit the conference in it's current or previous state. Do not just replicate a current conference, at a minimum add or subtract two institutions. However, this conference should be an example of what you think would make the most sense either financially, academically, geographically, athletically ... and hopefully a combination off all of that and more. List the teams, their current conference, and their athletic department revenue.
Question 3 (At least 500 words): Finally, spend some time to write about why some of the schools were added to the conference. What metrics were you looking at when you made the decision to add the team? Are there areas that the new institutions does not align with the other institutions in the conference? Do you believe this conference would actually be feasible, or which schools may not want to participate? How would the fans react to this conference? What sports would this conference be good for and why, which sports would they be bad for? Compare and contrast your conference to the current or soon to be conference. Talk about the differences and why you made those changes, and why you think this conference would be better and in what areas. Be as specific as you can be with financial numbers, viewership numbers, or any other metric that you believe is significant when it comes to conference construction and success.
